Watch out for squatters in vacant homes. I encountered one yesterday at a property for sale. When I opened the garage door on the side of the house there was a woman in an SUV with the engine running. The single garage door had opened and she couldn't pull out.
I asked "Who are you?" to which she replied, "We are the new renters." I told her "No, you are not! This house is for sale and there are two offers in on it right now." She shouted "This house was listed on Craig's Li...st and we rented it."
She then jumped in her SUV and proceeded to try and maneuver at an angle to get out the single car garage door opening because I was parked right in front of the double garage door.
I called 9-1-1 and reported what was happening and backed my car out of the driveway just in case the woman decided to ram my car as she pushed out of the garage.
As she drove by me she shouted, "Are you calling the cops?" Then she sped to the end of the street and screeched to a halt when another woman jumped in and they drove off.
Luckily I gave the dispatcher her license plates. The police came and took my report even though they said it is a situation that is rampant across the town right now as people are falsely advertising to "rent" these vacant homes on Craig's List.
My guess is she knew she was in the wrong or else she wouldn't have run. If she truly had paid to rent the home and had a valid rental or lease agreement in hand she would have stood her ground.
So, beware. If you see suspicious behavior in your neighborhood - cars pulling into vacant homes in the night - locksmiths changing locks on doors when you know that the house has been vacant for awhile or has been abandoned - report it to authorities. They will investigate.
The challenge is that there are people with fake leases moving into homes all over the city and then it becomes a legal battle for the owner to have them evicted.
If your is for sale and it is vacant or you are gone for extended periods of time:
1. Set your alarm. The realtors will put this in the notes on a listing.
2. Leave the lights on so that it looks like someone is home.
3. Add Security lights that come on outside to deter vandalism.
4. Notify your neighbors to keep an eye out for anything suspicious
5. Have someone you trust check your home periodically each day
It will save you time, money and aggravation if you take steps to prevent vandalism and squatters from invading your home.
